So…we’ve all been mean and have been mistreated. Right? At least a time or two.
When you become a grown up, somehow you expect yourself, to handle circumstance the way you’d instruct your child to handle it. Right?
To treat others how you want to be treated.
To show love and respect and grace to all.
To be forgiving.
To use your words, not your fists.
To simply walk away and turn the other cheek if your words aren’t heard.
To tell the truth.
To make new friends if those around you are not treating you with love and respect and grace.
Well…I have had to make some new friends this year. And I’ve had to learn to BE a better friend too.
I am relieved to say I have not mistreated anyone, at least not intentionally and certainly not used my fists…but I have not used my words with love and respect and grace many times and been thankful for God’s forgiveness and 2nd chances. And I have had to learn to forgive very hard things I was tempted to hang on to with bitterness.
But come on. Why do some grown ups act like they are a 7th grade girl all over again? The kind of 7th grade girl that gossips. The one that seeks to destroy the reputation of another grade girl for various awful reasons. As if 7th grade wasn’t bad enough…you turn THIRTY 7…and girls can still be straight up mean. Just plain ole’ mean. Saying things that are not true. Or saying things that make you look bad, on purpose. Or saying things just to hurt you.
Well..dear X…just like 7th grade…it still hurts. And just like 7th grade…it will one day be in the past. And hopefully like 7th grade when I was called an awful name for not scooting off a bench so the school bully girl could sit down and eat her lunch she took from someone else, I hope I can learn from the sting in my chest today of how to NOT be. How to be a good friend. More than that…to be the Christian God calls us all to be. And I can assure you…hurting one another doesn’t represent a Savior who came as a poor servant born in a barn stall who died naked and bleeding for us…it completely misrepresents him. And I love him. So much.
So in all your shopping and hurrying around…3 simple words. JUST BE NICE.
